Plea from our West Midlands Firefighters

I want to thank all our Emergency Services and particularly our Fire Fighters:

In the West Midlands  Fire Control has handled 4,649 calls, compared with 1,814 in the same seven-day period last year. The crews responded to 1,058 incidents, including 389 outdoor fires.
The fire service has asked that you:

• Avoid using disposable BBQs and having garden bonfires.
• Never have an open fire in the countryside.
• If they smoke, discard of cigarettes properly. The smallest ember can spark a fire that requires multiple fire crews to put out.
• Clear away bottles, glasses and any broken glass to prevent them magnifying the sun’s rays and starting a fire.
• If fire breaks out, call 999 immediately. Be clear about location, mentioning any nearby landmarks.
• Don’t attempt to fight the fire themselves unless it is very small and can be put out with a bucket of water – grass and crop fires can travel very quickly.
