Government defeated on the Finance Bill

The Government has broken records by being the first Government to be defeated on a Finance Bill since 1978. A Finance Bill enshrines the budget in law.

On Tuesday 8 January 2019 the Government was defeated on an amendment tabled to the Finance Bill by 7 votes. In the event of a no-deal, the Government will not be able to make tax changes without a vote in Parliament first. The Labour Party and Parliament has made clear that it is opposed to a no-deal Brexit.

I voted in favour of the amendment and the result was: Ayes: 303, Noes: 296.
