Happy Diwali

Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating the Festival of Lights in Britain, and to Hindu, Sikh and Jain communities all over the world.

I know that for many of you, this year’s Diwali will be tough. Families and friends will be unable to see one another, and the usual celebrations have been stripped back or conducted online.

In these difficult times it is more important than ever to celebrate the message of Diwali as a festival of new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, hope over despair.

Within our communities, there are many who have shown us the triumph of light over darkness. Our health, care and other key workers have worked tirelessly and selflessly for others in their fight against Covid-19 and have given us hope in some of our darkest hours. Though we may be forced apart by the virus today, we remember the spirit of community and togetherness shown to keep one another safe.

Let us draw confidence from the timeless message of Diwali: that light will ultimately triumph over darkness. Shubh Diwali!
