James Bridge Site – Gasholders Letter from National Grid

I have received a letter from National Grid regarding work to dismantle gasholders on the James Bridge site near to Darlaston Road which I have set out below:

We want to let you know that we have started to dismantle one of the gas holders at the James Bridge site.

We’re using two excavators to help us take down the gas holder. These make a high pitched sound when they are used so we’ll continue to monitor noise levels at the site. We will use sound barriers to prevent noise travelling to nearby homes if we exceed acceptable levels.

You may notice more lorries coming onto and leaving the site, to collect steel and take it away for recycling. We’ll have traffic marshals on-site to make sure vehicles leave and enter safely and ensure mud isn’t transferred onto surrounding roads. We expect to it to take around five weeks to remove the first gas holder. We’ll then start to take down the second gas holder immediately afterwards and will be in touch again nearer the time.

We’ll continue to use an odour suppressant on the site. This is to reduce oily smells associated with dewatering and removing debris from the second gas holder which will start around 3 August. We expect that this activity will take four weeks complete.

We’re committed to being a good neighbour and wherever we work we take steps to minimise disruption to the local community. We’ll continue to monitor dust at our site boundary. We’ll use dust netting to prevent it spreading if this becomes an issue. Working hours are Monday to Friday from 8am until 6.30pm and Saturdays 8am until 2pm if required. We’ll let you know in advance if we need to work on a Saturday.

National Grid’s gas safety guidance remains unchanged by our work. If you ever smell gas in your home please contact the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

If you have any questions about work we are doing at the site, please call our Community Relations team on 0800 073 1047, available Monday to Friday from 7am – 7pm and from 7am – 1pm on Saturday.”
