Opposition Day: VAT on Household Energy Bills

Labour has put forward a fully-funded plan to tackle the rising energy costs faced by millions of families across the country.

On Tuesday 11 January 2022, Labour used our Opposition Day to table a binding motion on the Government to reduce energy bills. The motion pledged to completely cancel VAT on energy bills for a year, and expand the Warm Home Discount scheme from 2.2 million to 9 million households. This would be paid for with a windfall tax on the profits of oil and gas companies in the North Sea.

I voted in favour of the motion, which was not passed: Ayes 229 and Noes 319.
