On Wednesday 9 October 2013 Valerie hosted the launch of the Sidney Goldberg Memorial Competition with Mr Speaker and Rachelle Goldberg, who has funded the Memorial Prize, in the Speaker’s State Rooms.
“To mark the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day landings Rachelle Goldberg has set up and funded the Sidney Goldberg Memorial Competition 2014 to honour her farther’s memory. Sidney Goldberg preformed a vital service during the D-Day landings and was also instrumental in getting the Government to commemorate the 50th and 60th Anniversaries. Sidney also served for many years as the Honorary National Public Relations Officer for the Normandy Veterans’ Association.”
“I would like to thank Mr Speaker for attending and speaking at the launch, and also for allowing the event to take place in the Speaker’s State Rooms. The event was also attended by Members of the House of Commons, a member of the Royal British Legion, French and Canadian dignitaries, children from Our Lady and St. John’s Catholic Primary School and Gunnersbury School, members of Tel Aviv University, the Competition Judging Panel. “
“The Competition will open on Monday 14 October 2013 and is open to all Primary and Secondary Schools. There are different age groups and the winner from each age group will receive a trip, with their guardian, to the Normandy landing beaches. In addition there is a second and third place prize.”
