Valerie re-appointed as Shadow Leader of the House

I want to thank everyone who voted, sent messages of support, and to the incredible team of volunteers, Labour Party members, and my wonderful family for their unwavering support. I am honoured to be re-elected as your MP for Walsall South.

Many of you queued to exercise your democratic rights and it made a difference. Turnout was 66%, and with a swing of 2.91% and a win in six of seven wards, my majority has increased to 8, 892.

Labour’s manifesto set out a positive vision for our country, which has been responded to by voters because it offered hope not fear. I want to thank those who voted for that vision – a vision for young people; a vision for those who work; those who are sick and vulnerable; and those who are elderly. The Labour Party has a vision for all stages of our lives.

My constituents gave a clear message that they did not want more of the same; but to abolish tuition fees, protect the NHS, and build affordable homes. We need to be able to address the problem of stagnant wages which have not kept pace with the rise in cost of living. Labour has consistently been saying that austerity is damaging both our communities in Walsall South and the country.

I was pleased to be sworn in on Wednesday 14 June 2017 and take my seat in the House of Commons. Jeremy Corbyn has confirmed that I will be continuing as Shadow Leader of the House of Commons.

I will continue to represent residents and be a strong voice for Walsall South.
