Valerie visited the Walsall Ecohouse to see how the owners, Martin and Jane Normanton, managed to cut their energy use and carbon emissions by 70%.
Mr Normanton emphasised the importance of being able to cut emissions in a cost effective way, without resorting to expensive hi-tech solutions. They have cut their emissions and their bills through simple steps, including wall insulation, draughtproofing, using energy efficient appliances and turning down the thermostat by just one degree Celcius.
“I am impressed with what Mr and Mrs Normanton have achieved. They have shown that you do not need to invest huge amounts of money to make your home much more energy efficient. At this time when household budgets are being squeezed and carbon emissions are as high as ever, it is vital that we find cost effective ways to reduce emissions and save money on energy bills.”
Mr and Mrs Normanton regularly hold open days to show and advise people how to cut their carbon emissions and save money. If you wish to discuss cutting your energy use and carbon emissions with Mr and Mrs Normanton, they can be contacted at martin.normanton [at] tiscali.co.uk.
