A Requiem Mass was held In Westminster Cathedral for the late Sir David Amess MP on Tuesday 23 November 2021. Cardinal Vincent Nichols head of the Roman Catholics in the UK presided over the Mass. The Cathedral was filled to capacity for the Mass.

Music started with the organ played by Peter Stevens, the Assistant Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral. Members of The Music Man Project sang ‘Peace and Hope’. David championed this group in his constituency.

A message from Pope Francis was read out by the Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti, the Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain. In the message the Pope said: “The Holy Father prays that all who honour his memory will be confirmed in the resolve to reject the ways of violence, to combat evil with good and help build a society of ever greater justice, fraternity and solidarity.”

U.S. Congressman Robert Miller Pittenger read from the book of Wisdom.

The eulogy was delivered by Ann Widdecombe, former Conservative MP and David’s friend.  The Choristers sang a song of farewell as the coffin was blessed with holy water and incense:

May the angels lead you into paradise; may the martyrs receive you and lead you into the holy city of Jerusalem. May the choirs of angels receive you and, with Lazarus, who was once poor, may you enjoy eternal rest. May he Rest in Peace.
